Five Ways to Spice Up Monochrome

oversizedwhite002Words: @oliverinstead • Photos: David

Let’s cut to the chase because you all know what to expect when you click into this link – black and white have long worn the ‘boring‘ label but in this post, I like to show you a few tips and tricks to spice up an outfit, or even an entire wardrobe consisting of nothing other than black, white and every shade in between.

1. Shape-shift

I love my basic – basic tees, basic jeans, basic jumpers, basic EVERYTHING. They’re versatile and it’s super easy to throw them together and look somewhat presentable. However, as much as I love these minimal pieces, I make sure I shape-shift from the basics to the unusuals now and again to keep the looks interesting.

2. Play with patterns

Patterns don’t always have to be bright and dramatic. Opt for subtle black and white checks, tartans or floral prints, most of which are pretty accessible so make good use of them.

3. Layering it on thick… get it? 😉

Anyway, if there is one thing the British ‘summer‘ weather is good for, is that you can still be creative with layers even when the sun decides to show its face. In this outfit, I’ve layered one oversized white tee on top of another for extra warmth and dimension.

4. Accessorise

I’m guilty of not doing this quite enough but I’m most certainly starting to… If done right, accessories can elevate an outfit. If you’re not confident enough to go too bold on this like I ain’t, a neckerchief, watch or bracelet are always a safe bet to add a little dash of colour to a monochromatic outfit.

5. Attention to detail!!

Lastly, a zip, a seam, a cuff or even a button can make all the difference to a monochrome ensemble. Especially when your outfit is so plain and simple, every detail on show is amplified so make every single one of them count!

I hope you’ve found some useful tips in this post. I like to think that they apply to both men and womenswear so comment below and let me know how you style your monochrome outfits. 这些tips其实男装女装通用,所以小奥希望读者们从我这张帖子里学到了一些黑白色的服饰搭配方法。如果你自己有啥私人的tips可以分享的话请务必要在留言板上给我知道哦!我们下张帖再会呗!

I usually associate black and white with work and business but you’ve got the smart casual at a good balance and it looks great!

I never monochrome but I should more often, the most I do is wear long black maxi dresses but then I need to style it up with a pop of colour in necklaces generally.

I’m an all-black-everything kind of girl and trying to add some greys and whites to my outfits as Spring is on it’s way (yes, it’s still winter here in Leeds…). Love the outfit!
