Lunch at Albert Square Chop House

A few weeks ago I was invited to Albert Square Chop House to try out their summer lunch menu – and it was an invitation I gladly accepted!

I had dined at Albert Square Chop House once before, and even though I enjoyed my dinner, I didn’t really have particularly high expectations for this lunch offer… I was wrong. Read about my meal and why I’d 100% recommend it!

Starter

As soon as I had a taste of the starter, the meal was immediately off to brilliant start! The pickled beetroot was so flavourful – coupled with the sweet yellow cherry tomatoes, it’s the perfect combination! I have to admit, I’m not the biggest fan of beetroot, but now I’m a convert.

This is a dish made for the heatwave we’ve been having.

Main

I’m disappointed to say that my main course was the weakest link of the entire meal. I’m not saying it wasn’t tasty – it just didn’t have the wow factor I got from the rest of the lunch.

The pastry was nice and flaky and buttery, just how I like it. But the filling left a lot to be desired in that there wasn’t a lot of texture and the puddle of sauce – even though very tasty – didn’t look particular appetising if I must be honest. I’d give it a 7/10… a slight let-down after an absolute knock-out starter!

Dessert

We weren’t sure if we had room for desserts but we were so glad we gave them a go…

If I had to pick a favourite, I’d say the trifle had a slight edge because of its surprise rhubarb twist (never had rhubarb in a trifle before, I must say!) but also because the strawberry pavlova was a bit too sweet for my liking – I wouldn’t have been able to finish a whole portion myself, but with some help from D, it was manageable and we thoroughly enjoyed both desserts.

*Note that one of our first choices from the lunch menu was unavailable so we went for the off the à la carte menu instead.*

In terms of service, we were served by a very friendly Australian manageress, and we were very well looked-after. As a veggie, I sometimes have dietary requests but nothing was too much of an issue for the staff – 10/10 in that department!

Have you ever been to Albert Square Chop House? Let me know your experience if you have / otherwise I’d recommend you check out their menus here.

Thanks for reading! I’ll see you in the next one!
